CHAPTER 25

I don’t remember the last few months that have passed. I can’t feel anything, and dream to feel something, anything. Last night, for the first time in a long time, I felt something when I touched Shay. I want to keep that high going longer, to remind myself what life can feel like.

Trying to make myself whole again, Kellen convinces me to go along for a ride against him in a street race. Each time the adrenaline runs through my veins, I feel closer to the person I once was. I have dreams of being the person I was before my father’s death. I need to get back to that person so I can focus on Shay and my family once again.

After last night with Shay, I realized I stopped doing what I loved best, which is being with Shay and causing trouble.

Revving my truck, I look over at Kellen as he stares back at me. Glancing back at the light it’s still red.

My mind is running faster than I can keep up. The ranch is mine to run. My mom has no interest in it, it’s not like she can do the work. So either we sell or it becomes mine until my sister, Jewels, is old enough to help. My heart can’t let it go. How do I tell Shay I can’t leave this town with her? It’s been her dream.

The light turns green and I stomp on the pedal, my truck lurching forward as we race down the road, our two trucks taking up both lanes of the side road.

Kellen’s hood is in the lead but as the road bends I can take the advantage to get ahead. Holding the steering wheel tight, I turn sharp, my wheels slipping off the road onto the shoulder of grass. The truck tries to pull into the ditch but I refuse to let it go. For the first time in weeks my mind is quiet. Nothing but the road on my mind. It’s refreshing, addicting. I’ve missed the silence.

As the road goes straight, I’m right in front only for Officer Rhode’s patrol car to be heading straight for us. I can’t press my pedal any more for the truck to speed up, my governor kicking in to slow it down.

I hear the squeal of Kellen’s brakes as he tries to shift behind me, missing the cop car only by a fraction.

My heart is in my throat but I think it’s stopped beating as my eyes stay on the rearview mirror instead of the road.

Catching me off guard, my wheels slip from under me, catching the ditch. I can’t help but overcompensate, twisting my truck to the opposite direction.

Lights and sirens blur as I try to not kill myself. My truck hits the bottom of the ditch and rocks with its tires still on the ground as I hear Rhodes on his speaker.

“Steele and Rogers, step out of your trucks with your hands on top of your heads.”

My hands shake and for the first time since my father’s death I am definitely feeling.
